When Email Authentication Backfires

I check my Spam folder every so often to make sure Gmail hasn’t buried something important. This time it had: an email from my daughter’s school district bookstore with the access codes for this term’s digital textbooks. If I hadn’t looked, she could have shown up to class with no way to open her books. Here’s the interesting part: nothing was broken. The district has told every email provider in the world: if a message claims to be from us and can’t prove it, don’t put it in the inbox; send it to spam instead. (In technical terms, their DMARC policy is set to quarantine, and Gmail followed that instruction exactly.) The problem was that the bookstore was using a mailing service that had never been properly authorized to send on the district’s behalf. Getting to quarantine is the hard part, and this district did it. Most organizations never get that far. But once enforcement is turned on, every new mailing tool someone signs up for can start landing in spam unless it’s properly authenticated. And often nobody notices until the messages matter and people start asking why they never arrived. I wrote up what happened and what organizations should do about it; the link is in the first comment.
